A Younger Look for the New Year

Rejuvenate Your Skin: 4 Steps To Prepare For Laser Skin Rejuvenation

If your skin is showing the signs of age, acne scars, or sun damage, you can revive your youthful appearance with laser skin resurfacing. Resurfacing removes the dull, damaged upper-layers of skin. Once the damaged layer of skin is removed, new skin cells are able to form, leaving you with a fresh, beautiful complexion. Before the procedure can be performed, here are four steps you should take that will ensure a positive outcome from your skin rejuvenation.

Discuss Your Health

If you have a history of cold sores around your mouth, you'll need to talk to your dermatologist about your condition. Laser resurfacing can leave you susceptible to herpes outbreaks. To prevent problems, your dermatologist may need to prescribe you an antiviral medication that you'll need to take prior to your procedure. The medication will help you avoid an outbreak after your skin is resurfaced.

Stop Smoking

If you smoke, you'll need to stop before your procedure. Smoking can interfere with your body's ability to heal properly. It can also increase your chances of developing a post-procedure infection. To protect yourself, and promote healthy healing, stop smoking for several weeks prior to the procedure. Once you've healed completely, you can resume smoking, if you'd prefer. If you're having a difficult time breaking the habit, talk to your doctor about a smoking cessation program.

Avoid the Sun

If you spend a lot of time out in the sun, you should try to limit your exposure for several months prior to skin resurfacing. Sun exposure can cause pigment changes in your skin, which can lead to permanent discoloration following laser resurfacing. If you can't avoid the sun, be sure to use a good sun block each time you go outside. It's also a good idea to wear a hat whenever possible.

Have Ice Packs on Hand

After the procedure, your skin will be red and swollen for several days. You may also experience some discomfort. You can alleviate the swelling and discomfort by applying ice packs to your face. You can make your own ice packs using resealable plastic bags, water, and rubbing alcohol.

Fill your plastic bags with two-cups water and one-cup rubbing alcohol. Place your bags in the freezer and leave them there until you need them. The solution will freeze to a soft, slush consistency, which will conform well to the contours of your face. Apply ice packs as needed. These packs can be reused by placing them back in the freezer when they thaw.

Laser resurfacing will restore your youthful appearance. If you have questions or concerns regarding the procedure, be sure to speak to your dermatologist.
